Lot Essay

This type of French style cabinet with marble top, oriental lacquer and Grecian lion-paw feet reflects the eclectic style popularised by King George IV (1820-1830). It evolved from the type of cabinets illustrated in the Drawing Rooms at Brighton Pavilion in the early 1820's (see: J. Morley, The Making of the Royal Pavilion Brighton, London, 1984, p. 131). A related chiffonier-commode, now at Brighton Pavilion, and a related commode, are illustrated C. Myusgrave, Regency Furniture, London, 1961, fig. 25 and M. Jourdain, Regency Furniture, London, rev. edn., 1965, fig. 45, respectively. A related dwarf-cabinet was sold in these Rooms, 7 November 1985, lot 41
