The labels on the charm read: Charm (Makutu). Aid to catch fish. Very valuable. Found at Rahotu 1892 and Given to Gen. A. Chapman by his brother Fred at Rahotu N.Z. Dec. 1905
These stone charms are a feature of Taranaki and are believed to have served as a resting place for the spirit of the land or of a particular resource area.
