Rowland Bennet was born in 1682 and died in 1714. He must have ordered wine with his own seal and cork at the age of 20. (See also lot ...resealed bottles). Bennet was the scion of a family of Norman descent with estates in the Gower peninsula, South Wales. His father William Bennet, Gent, of Penrice and The Sanctuary, was a descendant of Sir Gervase Bennet, Knight, of Penrice Castle. Rowland's grandfather, father and uncle are mentioned in the Survey of the Manor of Penrice of 1632 through the younger generations and Rowland himself lived in a house near the village known as The Sanctuary. In St. Andrew's Church, Penrice Village, there is a mural tablet on the wall dividing the nave from the chancel.... 'in memory of Rowland Bennet, Gent., who died Jan 11th, 1714, in yr 32 year of his age' and erected by his wife Sarah, in 1728'.
