Lot Essay

This is a copy of the print by Ennea Vico, presumeb to be after a lost composition by Raphael. There is a slightly more finished, larger version, 8 7/8 x 12¼in. (220 x 310mm.) in the Roman Album (S. 689; British Museum 1885-3-14-249), and the composition was engraved by John H. Lips in 1779 for the French eidition of Lavater's Essays on Physiognomy (S. 782) and by T. Holloway after Fuseli, 20 October 1791, for the English edition of published by Joseph Johnson in 1792 (S. 966). The engraving lacks the upper part of the mausoleum behind
