Lot Essay

These ornaments are typical of work carried out in Rome at the end of the 18th Century and in the early 19th Century combining rare marbles with ormolu of high quality. The leading makers at this time were Guiseppe Valadier, Carlo Albacini and Francesco and Luigi Riglietti. Two columns of similar style are discussed by A. Conzález-Palacios in the catalogue of Fasto Romano, Palazzo Sacchetti, Rome, 15 May - 30 June 1991, pp. 222-223, figs. 191 and 192
