Lot Essay

As in the previous lot, Dresser's decorative motifs are recalled in this chair. Although Dresser produced several designs for Coalbrookdale at this date, the trompe l'oeil effect of the seat and the turned 'Jacobean' uprights demonstrate a more eclectic approach than Dresser's much purer style, and indicate the breadth of taste to which the manufacturers were attempting to appeal.
