Lot Essay

A drawing for a closely related candlestick with very similar nozzle, heads and feet is in a catalogue of designs for bronziers in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et. al., vergoldete Bronzen Munich, 1986, p. 326, fig. 5.1.7). A closely related set of two pairs of candlesticks was delivered to the château de Fontainebleau by Galle in 1804 (J.-P. Samoyault, Pendules et Bronzes d'Ameublement entrés sous le Premier Empire, Paris, 1989, p. 175, fig. 155). A related pair, although entirely gilt, was sold anonymously at Sotheby's London, 3 December 1991, lot 299.
