Inlaid overall with scrolling foliage and cartouches, the scrolling moulded pediment above the spreading top section with two arched doors enclosing three shelves, above the bureau section with a slanting writing-slope enclosing to the reverse a later green baize-lined writing-surface and a fitted interior with six variously-sized concave-fronted drawers and three pigeon-holes above a slide conceiling a well, the lower section with three waved long drawers and flanked by rounded angles on conforming tapering feet, the conceiled well previously with drawers, possibly Maltese

Lot Essay

This bureau-cabinet, inlaid with mosaic tablets of burr-walnut and a Roman acanthus filigree in the 'arabesque' manner popularised by Jean Bérain (d. 1711), displays a Venus-shell badge beneath the voluted pediments of the serpentined cornice, while others feature beneath baldacchinos on the doors and are accompanied by flower-vases.
