A VERY FINE GERMAN PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE with blued octagonal sighted barrel rifled with eight grooves and decorated with running scrollwork in encrusted gold at the muzzle and breech, shaped adjustable back-sight engraved with strapwork, case-hardened breech and tang each chiselled in low relief with scrollwork picked out in gold between gold lines, the latter with a gilt wolf-head and the gilt arms of Salm, case-hardened flat lock chiselled in low relief with foliated scrollwork involving two gilt hounds and a wolf, and signed in gold Gothic characters, pierced and chiselled hammer picked out in gold, highly figured walnut full stock profusely carved in relief with scrolling foliage inhabited by birds and animals, opposite the lock a sportsman and two chamois in a mountainous landscape, and behind the cheek-piece a stag beset by a hound in a wooded landscape, blued iron mounts decorated with gilt scrollwork and foliage, the side-plate with two gilt eagles, the spurred trigger-guard with a gilt lyre, engraved butt-plate with hinged butt-trap cover, set trigger, turned ramrod-pipes heightened with gilding, sling swivels, horn fore-end cap, original brass-tipped whalebone ramrod, and nearly all its original finish, by Adam Rosen in Dyck, circa 1850
