AN UNUSUAL GERMAN FLINTLOCK FOWLING-PIECE in the Spanish taste, with blued two-stage barrel struck at the breech with gold-lined counterfeit marks of Alonzo Martinez of Madrid and five decorative gold-lined marks, silver spider fore-sight, brass-lined vent, signed engraved flat bevelled lock, the cock retained by a bolt with engraved head, highly figured moulded maple half-stock lightly carved in relief with foliage (grip and fore-end cracked), lightly carved cheek-piece, engraved iron mounts including pierced flat foliate side-plate involving a serpent, a marine monster and a vacant escutcheon, and faceted trigger-guard and ramrod-pipes, and horn fore-end cap (ramrod and sling mounts missing), by W. Pick à Dyck, circa 1720-30

Lot Essay

This gun is constructed in such a way as to show no exterior screws on the lock and side-plate, both of which are held internally by means of bars terminating in eye-holes. To dismantle the gun it is necessary first to remove the screw which retains the barrel tang. The barrel is removed by withdrawing the ramrod tail-pipe which engages with a ring on the underside of the barrel
