1905 FORD MODEL F TONNEAU

Chassis No. 683
Right hand drive.

Henry J Ford began manufacturing motor cars in July 1903 in Dearborn, Michigan with financial support from coal baron Alexander Young Malcolmson. The Model A two seater runabout was a buggy with an 8hp twin cylinder engine situated under the seat. In 1904 a 10hp engine was developed powering the AC and C models with a claimed speed of 38mph. In the same year a luxury Model B was introduced that was a complete change of direction for Henry Ford in that it had an elegant four seater body and a 24hp 318 cubic inch four cylinder engine. It was an expensive motor car and with its shaft drive and rear hub drum brakes was twice as expensive as the two cylinder models.

In late 1904 the Model F was designed to incorporate a similar four seater body, but on a shorter wheelbase and using the C-type two cylinder engine. This was more competitively priced and provided Ford with an elegant tonneau style motor car.

This 1905 Model F is the only known example in Europe and probably one of only four or five to exist worldwide. Prior to coming to the UK it was part of a collection in Texas, and before that at the Harrah Collection in Reno, Nevada. The car is in remarkably good condition and is a very good runner having been restored some years ago in America. It has no hood, but these were optional when the cars left the factory.
It has a full set of acetylene headlamps plus two paraffin scuttle mounted side lights and rear light. The elegant four seater two rear door bodywork has deep buttoned black leather upholstery. This is one of the rarest of all Ford models and provides an attractive and practical four seater touring car with a genuine 40mph performance that will be competitive and of great interest on special event rallies.
