1951/6 ALLARD/AC SPECIAL ROADSTER
Registration No. Formely MGT 850
Chassis No.
Engine No. 1098-H8KR
Right hand drive.
This particular vehicle is an interesting example of an individual's taste and choice in a post war sports car. The vehicle was acquired as the prototype J2X Allard Roadster. The beefy Allard J2X is one of the best-respected of that particular group of Anglo-American sports cars built in the early 1950s. They were intended mainly for export to what was at that time the highly lucrative and enthusiastic US market.
Only 83 Allard J2X cars were produced and a mere 5 cars were originally sold in the UK including the prototype. The J2X was supplied with a variety of engines and the prototype is thought to have started life with a Ford side valve V8 which was converted to overhead valve, and through subsequent owners acquired a Cadillac V8 engine and an Alvis Speed 20 gearbox by around 1957. In this configuration we believe it was owned and driven by the husband of the present owner.
During the 1960s, although obviously delighted with the coachwork of the J2X, he decided to try and improve the handling and power of the car and purchased a rolling chassis of an AC428. To this rolling chassis the J2X body was professionally fitted. The original Allard chassis with Cadillac engine was sold and this vehicle is still known to exist with new coachwork.
The vehicle on offer today is an AC428 rolling chassis, with the "big block" 7-litre V8 Ford engine giving some 345bhp, clothed in the J2X coachwork. Having much in common with the Cobra, it shared a similar excellent chassis, with all round disc brakes fully independent suspension and was intended to challenge the Aston Martin, Ferrari and Maserati market. No doubt this early 50s looking Allard will have surprised many other road users.
This car has not been used on the road since 1984 and has been garaged since then. It will require a certain degree of restoration before being roadworthy again. The bodywork is finished in blue with cream
upholstery and tonneau.
