INDENT6467 Private Ernest Morris, born Winchester, was killed in action in Belgium 17th November 1914 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial. The 10th Hussars were stationed at the time between Hooge and Zillebeke - the Regimental History states "On November 17th the Germans delivered an attack and the 10th Royal Hussars suffered many casualties...10 O.R.s being killed also 9 wounded".

Lieutenant Edward Lawson-Smith was travelling home on sick leave from his Regiment, then in India, when war broke out. He immediately volunteered for service and was attached to the 11th Hussars. On 20 October 1914 near Messines, he was working in the trenches when an enemy 16 inch shell fell into his trench, burying him with six others under a mass of earth. The Regimental History states that 14 men and two officers lost their lives on this occasion. Lawson-Smith's brother, John, was also killed 20 October 1914 with the 1st West Yorkshire Regiment.
