Lot Essay

INDENT Captain George Neville Mackie, born 1883, served in the South African War 1900-1902 and was mentioned in Lord Kitchener's Despatches of 8 March 1902 (London Gazette 25.4.1902), 'For good service in directing and controlling his men at Tafel Kop, Cape Colony, 26 November 1901 (now 2nd. Lieut. West Surrey Regiment)'; transferred to the Indian Army, served on the North West Frontier 1908; proceeded to France with the Indian Corps and was killed in action 26 April 1915 during the Second Battle of Ypres whilst attached to 57th (Wilde's) Rifles. Captain Mackie is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial. (For further details refer to Indian Corps in France pp. 299-300)
