Lot Essay

A large watercolour version of one of Shields's illustrations to Defoe's History of the Plague of London (1862). The original drawings are in the Manchester City Art Gallery. Shields was one of the best of the Pre-Raphaelite illustrators, and the History of the Plague is generally considered his masterpiece in this field.
