This watercolour dates from circa 1858. It is comparable in size and subject to The Sunset, or The Dip of the Sun (with Leger Galleries in 1969, and exhibited at the Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1857, no. 240). Other comparable watercolours from this period include Mountain Landscape or Sunset (private collection), and Fortune Telling - The Gypsy and the Waggoner (Huntingdon Library and Art Gallery, San Marino, California).

The watercolour will be included in future editions of Dr. Raymond Lister's Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Samuel Palmer, as number 553a. We are grateful to Dr. Lister for his help in preparing this entry.
