A transcription of the old label, attached to the backing states that the present watercolour was given as a wedding gift by Sir John and Lady Nicholson and Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Glazebrook in 1954 to 'JDRTT & GT' A further more finished view of Beeston Castle painted by Cox in 1849 is illustrated in M. Neal Solly, Memoir of the Life of David Cox, London, 1873, p. 141, pl. XV.
Beeston Castle was built by Randle Blundeville, Earl of Chester, circa 1220. The castle lies 740 feet up on an isolated rock. The present watercolour is a view from the village of Tattenhall.
