Lot Essay

These two children were the sons of Neuville, the Fermier Général. The seated boy wears a brown suit with full fronted breeches. The other one is in a Polish Hussar style uniform with a cap. Nothing is known of them. Carmontelle drew their uncle l'Abbé Neuville and said about him that 'there was no greater womaniser in the whole clergy of France'.

Similar strips added on the side of the drawing appear on a few other sheets at Chantilly such as the portrait of Mlle. de Maury, dame d'honneur de la princesse de Conti
