Stone axe heads found in Nigeria have been re-used in the cult of Shango amongst the Yoruba, being kept in large receptacles carved for this purpose. The Thunder-god was associated with thunder storms and by extension with meteorites, which were found when digging, as were the stone axe heads used by forbears of the present population. The empire of old Oyo is the area most closely associated with the cult of Shango, the deified fourth king of the Yoruba, but the axe heads are found in various areas of Nigeria. When William Fagg was shown these two celts encased in bronze some six years ago, he suggested they might even have been used for cult purposes in the Lower Niger area.
