The go of Genchukyo was used by Ito Katsumi and his student Katsumitsu. Ito Katsumi was born in 1829. At the age of 8 he studied under Baiken of the Kano school and became a student of Tanaka Seijo. He later lost favour with Tanaka Seiju and was obliged to leave the Tanaka workshop and give up metalwork. After studying lacquer under Shibata Zeshin he was adopted by Ito Masahiro in 1860 and again studied metalwork.

This tsuba was made during the last month of the Edo period, Keio 4 (1868). Taiseihokan had taken place in 1867 and the Meiji period started in September 1868.
