Lot Essay

There are similarities between the distinctive Gothic cane-filled trefoil on the present lot and the splat on a set of chairs of very similar date that were stamped by John Gee and sold in these Rooms, 9 July 1992, lot 91. Gee seems to have served as 'Chairmaker and Turner to his Majesty' from 1799 until some time before 1824.
