LOGGAN, David. Oxonia Illustrata. Oxford: e Theatro Sheldoniano, 1675.
2° (432 x 294mm.). Engraved throughout, title, three text leaves, one index leaf, one double-page map, one double-page plan, one double-page plate of university dress, 35 views (34 double-page, one folding). (Most plates torn and repaired, marginal in the main, but occasionally affecting the image area, some soiling.) Contemporary red morocco, panelled in gilt, g.e. (spine and corners repaired, inner hinges reinforced). Provenance: SAMUEL PEPYS (signature at foot of title), presented to; Caleb Banks (1658-1696, inscription 'Caleb Banks Ex Dono Samuelis Pepys Armigeri Anno Domini 1675'); Thomas Walker, alumnus of Queens' College, Cambridge (inscription dated 1718).
A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY. Pepys was a close friend of the merchant and landowner Sir John Banks, and acted as an honorary godfather to his son Caleb. He also played an important role in making the arrangements for Caleb's visit to France in 1677-9, during which time John Locke was his tutor. In 1675 Caleb was admitted to Gray's Inn, so it would have been an appropriate time for Pepys to give him a Loggan. We gratefully acknowledge the help of Dr. Richard Luckett in cataloguing this lot. Madan 3035; Wing L-2838.
