Lot Essay

The present clock was almost certianly made by Pierre-Etienne Le Noir, 1724-1791, the son of Etienne le Noir, 1698-1778. This father-and-son team worked in Quai des Orfèvres and were regarded as one of France's most celebrated clockmakers. Their cases were often made by the great Saint-Germain fondeurs and their clients included Madame de Pompadour for whom they made a clock decorated with vincenes flowers bought for 1080 Livres and also a repeating watch for the enormous sum of 1500 Livres
