8 volumes comprising 6 volumes of text in 1, 8° (315 x 230mm.), and atlas volumes, 6 volumes in 7, large 2° (520 x 375mm.). Text with half-titles (occasional minor spotting). Atlas volumes with chromolithographic title and 6 section titles in Cyrillic, 6 plate lists in French, 508 chromolithographic and tinted lithographic plates after F.G. Solntsev, captions in Cyrillic and French. (Very occasional light spotting to margins.) Green morocco gilt, covers with broad gilt borders of flower roll-tools and rules, spines gilt, similarly tooled with stylised flower motifs, fawn morocco lettering pieces, gilt inner dentelles, g.e., by Wright. A very fine set of THE FIRST MAJOR PUBLICATION ON EARLY WORKS OF ART IN RUSSIA. The fine plates are superb examples of Russian lithography, and are accompanied by detailed descriptions in the text. S.G. Stroganov (1794-1882) was a state official and archaeologist. As a young man he served in the Army, and from 1827 to 1874 was President of the Society of Russian History and Antiquity, presiding over the commission of this publication. The work was sanctioned and financed by Nicolas I, and supervised by Stroganov, Zagoskin, Snegirev and Vel'tman. Complete copies of the work are rare. Fekula 6194; Obol'ianinov 724; Burtsev 337. (8)
