DICKENS, Charles. Sketches by "Boz," illustrative of every-day life, and every-day people. London: John Macrone, 1836-1837.

First and Second series in 3 volumes, 8° (200 x 126mm.; 195 x 122mm.). Three etched frontispieces, one additional title (to second series) and 22 plates by George Cruikshank (with two additional plates from the second edition loosely inserted), advertisements dated December 1836 at back of second series volume. (Half-title to second series lacking, some browning.) Various original cloth bindings: first series in green mille-feuille-grained cloth, spines blocked in gilt (spines rubbed at extremities with slight loss to head and foot, front free endpapers replaced); second series in original pink/brown cloth, blocked in gilt and blind, the title lettered in gilt on black (spine neatly repaired), later green cloth over boards chemise and green half morocco slip-case modelled as a book. Provenance: COMTE ALAIN DE SUZANNET (bookplate, sale Sotheby's 22 November 1971 lot 5).
