COLERIDGE, Samuel Taylor (1772-1834). Conciones ad Populum, or Adresses to the People. [Bristol:] 1795.

4° (158 x 94mm). (Slight soiling to title.) 19th-century polished half calf gilt (extremities rubbed, marbled paper covers with small area erased). Provenance: Robert, Marquess of Crewe (armorial bookplate). Not in Lowndes; Haney III 3.

FIRST EDITION. The contemporary critical reception to this work was generally favourable, and, although disapproving about the content did not criticise the style. For those whose antipathy towards revolutionary France was strong, this short but often witty work was particularly provocative: 'When shall we cease to see this nonsense repeated, which the best informed even of our French enemies have again and again contradicted?' (See the British Critic, 1796, III, pp. 682-3.)
