SANSON, N, Hubert JAILLOT, Herman MOLL and others. [Composite Atlas] with general title from Jaillot, Atlas Nouveau contenant toutes les parties du monde. [Paris: circa 1720].

Tall 2° (625 x 270mm.) Engraved title taken from the 1696 edition of Atlas Nouveau, manuscript table of maps lettered vol.1, in French, 66 double-page engraved maps, most of Northern Europe and Spain, but including 2 maps of the world and a celestial planisphere, the majority hand-coloured in outline and folding, all on guards. (Some very light staining or discolouration, dust-soiling to margins, a few old repairs.) Contemporary French half calf, spine in 8 compartments, lettered in two (spine repaired at head and foot). Provenance: Joliffe (18th century armorial bookplate).

An interesting composite atlas of maps and town views of Northern Europe (particularly Germany and middle Europe, the Low Countries but also including the Iberian peninsula). Most of the maps are Jaillot or Mortier reissues of Sanson, but they also include maps by the heirs of the Visschers, de L'Isle, Senex and Maxwell, Bowles, and Moll. The world maps include Moll's large folding map of 1719, uncoloured, and Covens and Mortier's reissue of Jaillot's large world map Mappe-Monde Geo-Hydrographique. This particular volume was originally part of a series made up for a French client in the early 18th century, and various English maps have been added in the later part of the 18th-century, by an English owner.
