HERBAL. -- Christian EGENOLPH (publisher). Herbarum Imagines Vivae. Der kreuter lebliche Contrafeytung [Imaginum Herbarum Pars II. Andertheyl der Kreutter Conterfeytungen]. Frankfurt-am-Main: Christian Egenolph, 1536.

2 parts in 1 volume, 4° (173 x 132mm.). Titles bordered with woodcuts, illustrated throughout with about 290 WOODCUTS OF FLOWERS EACH WITH FINE CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURING, with their Latin and German names in letterpress above, 7 pp. and 3 pp. index at the end of parts one and two respectively. (G3 and b4 holed, a few other pages with surface damage, headline of 1 leaf of first index shaved, some browning and staining.) Contemporary limp vellum (ties defective). Provenance: notes and marginalia in Dutch and Greek in a 17th-century hand; Juan Carlos Ahumada of Buenos Aires (booklabel, inscription and 2 ink stamps).

A RARE EXAMPLE OF AN EARLY FIELD HERBAL. The work is essentially without text and is clearly intended as a tool to aid identification. The cuts are reduced reversed copies of those by Weiditz for Brunfels' Herbarum Vivae Eicones (1530-1532). Pritzel 2626.
