Almost all the subjects associated with the animalier work of Emmanuel Fremiet were executed in the early part of his career. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1843 with a gazelle. This was then followed by a wide and varied selection of cats, dogs, horses, bears and many other creatures. The figure of the stretching dog is known to have been modelled in or before 1844 (see Payne, p.200) and is a good example of the tenderness and sympathy employed by Fremiet in sculpting his subjects.
