The model of General Gordon was originally commissioned in 1885 and on completion was to be erected in Trafalgar Square. Sculpting his model, Hamo Thornycroft was anxious to obtain personal descriptions of his subject. Such descriptions proved to be rather contradictory, General Gordon being described as 'rather hump-backed' by one acquaintance but as someone who 'sat up well' by another. The General's brother urged Thornycroft to make the model 'as little military as possible'.

A similar model sold at Sotheby's, London, 23rd November, 1990.
