A rare collection of Dutch pamphlets on explorations in America, Taiwan, mainland China and the East Indies. Although new routes to the Far East had evolved by the end of the 16th century, China remained largely a closed book to European travellers until the establishment of the Jesuit mission at Peking in 1601. Dutch traders were responsible for two of the three major missions to explore China in the 1650s and 1660s, adding considerably to the knowledge gained by the missionaries. The early Dutch translation of Jacques de Bourges' work is particularly rare: the British Library catalogue lists only a 1683 edition. The first French description of the voyage was published in 1666.

The account of the New Netherlands by van der Donck "possesses an interest beyond its rarity, being the relation of an educated man regarding the Indians of the island and the neighbourhood of New York" Church, 535 (first edition). Van der Donck arrived in New Amsterdam in 1642 and served as sheriff of the colony of Rennselaerswyck; Howes describes him as "New York's first lawyer".
