A Brown-Glazed Stoneware Ewer
Tang dynasty, 8th-9th century
The globular body with a short conical spout rising diagonally from the shoulder on one side of the waisted neck opposite the double-strap handle applied with a pinched boss at the everted rim and at the lower, pointed terminal, covered with a reddish-brown glaze falling in an irregular line towards a flared foot with almost flat base

Lot Essay

A similar brown-glazed stoneware ewer dating to the 8th century is illustrated in Sekai toji zenshu, vol. 11, Tokyo, 1976, col. pl. no. 27, and p. 213, fig. 34; and another by R. Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. I, London, 1994, p. 132, no. 215. A vessel of similar proportions, but with a whitish-green glaze, was included in the memorial exhibition, The Charles B. Hoyt Collection, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1952, p. 36, no. 140.
