An Olive-Brown-Glazed Stoneware Jar
Tang Dynasty/Five Dynasties period, 9th-10th century
Probably from the Yaozhou Huangbao kilns, the tapering bulbous body surmounted by a wide, shallow neck rising to an everted rim, covered with a matte glaze of dark, speckled olive-brown color falling short in an irregular line on the inside of the neck and on the exterior above the thick, spreading foot

Lot Essay

This is probably from the Yaozhou Huangbao kilns, which made black-glazed wares in the Tang and Five Dynasties period. When these black glazes were underfired they produced fine crystals when cooling, giving greenish, yellowish, and brownish microcrystalline effects.
