Lot Essay

The group of double-ended coupled column prayer rugs derive originally from the same model as lot 202 in this sale, and ultimately from the silk warped Ottoman court prayer rugs such as one sold in these Rooms by Davide Halevim, 14 February 2001, lot 26. A number of rugs from this group have been published; for further examples please see the note to the example in the Christopher Alexander Collection offered in these Rooms 15 October 1998, lot 226; or Hali 69, June/July 1993, auction price guide p.144. The Hali note discusses the origin of the group, pointing out that the traditional attribution of Ladik has been questioned by May Beattie ("Coupled Column Prayer Rugs", Oriental Art, vol.XIV, no.4, Winter 1968, pp.243-258), and suggesting Ushak as an alternative.

The present example is very unusual within the group in its colouring, with its almost complete avoidence of red which in most is the dominant tone. Although its condition leaves a considerable amount to be desired, the better than average original quality of drawing.
