Lot Essay

Their design is inspired by the monumental lead sphinxes executed by Nicolas Couston for the Royal Pavillion at Marly. The designs, attributed to Couston, are conserved in the Cabinet des Dessins, Stockholm (see F. Souchal, Les Frère Couston, Paris 1980, p.195-6).
