FIRST EDITION of Scheuchzer's travels in the Alps, which comprises three journeys. The work is dedicated to the Royal Society in London, and is published with their sponsorship and support. Scheuchzer was a member of the society - and of the Academy at Berlin and the Académie des Curieux. A doctor by training, he became professor of mathematics and later of physics in Zürich, and a detailed observer of geological phenomena. He did much to propogate the ideas of Newton in Switzerland, as well as using his scientific training to prevent condemnations to death for sorcery in his home town of Zürich. A second edition of this work was published in 1723 (cf. lot ??). Lonchamp 2640; Brunet V, 198.
