Lot Essay

Jean-Jules Cambos (d.1917) trained at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris under Jouffroy from 1853 to 1857. From then on he exhibited busts and figures at the Salon, the latter often of mythological and romantic inspiration. The present David Vainqueur is a fine cast by Pinedo, who worked both as a sculptor and founder, casting particularly in the 1890s. Cambos has portrayed the biblical hero in a graceful and naturalistic pose, enlivened by exotic details typical of the contemporary taste in France and exploiting his subject to advantage as a vehicle for the study of the male nude.
