Lot Essay

The original statue known as the Diana of Gabies, Diana Robing or Diana Succinct was excavated in 1792 on the property of Prince Borghese at Gabii, outside Rome. In 1807, it was purchased along with the majority of the Borghese antiquities by Napoleon Bonaparte and by 1820 was installed in the Louvre. Counted as one of the most important finds at Gabii, the Diana was given a star in 1880 by Baedeker and consequently smaller replicas in bronze, terracotta and plaster were very popular.
