Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Hella Robels for confirming the attribution from a transparency. In her opinion the present picture may preceed that with a different landscape in the Royal Collection at Kensington Palace, which is signed and dated 1653 (H. Robels, Frans Snyders, Munich, 1989, pp. 334-5, no. 236, illustrated), a view already expressed by Richter, loc. cit., and borne out by Snyders' collaboration with Wildens, who died in that year. Versions in the Casa Torres, Madrid, at Waddesdon, and in the sale in these Rooms, 17 July 1981, lot 157, listed by Dr. Robels as copies of the Kensington Palace picture, may now be regarded as copies of the present work
