Lot Essay

Sittings are recorded in January 1757 and March 1760. The sitter was the 3rd son of John Francis Buller of Shillingham (d. 1751) and his wife Rebecca, daughter and co-heir of Sir Jonathan Trelawny, Bt., Bishop of Winchester. He became M.P. for East Looe, and one of the Lords of the Treasury. He married, firstly, Mary daughter of Sir John St. Aubyn, Bt. of Clowance, Cornwall, and secondly, in 1768, Elizabeth-Caroline (d. 1798) daughter of John Hunter. Edward, his son by his first marriage, became Vice-Admiral and was created a baronet in 1808.
