Lot Essay
The sitter, who died in 1771, was the daughter of William Woodyeare, of Crookhill, in the parish of Conisbrough in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Her only surviving brother, John Woodyeare, was painted by Batoni in 1750: the portrait is now at Minneapolis (A. Clark, ed. E.P. Bowron, Pompeo Batoni, Oxford, 1985, no. 139). In 1759 she married, as his third wife, the Hon. Morgan Vane (1706-1779), of Bilby Hall, Nottinghamshire, second son of the 2nd Lord Barnard
