manuscript on buff paper, 42ff. plus three flyleaves, each with 5ll. of bold black sini script, punctuation in red, red devices between verses, double red ruled margin, the divisions of text marked marginally in red, (negligible smudging, some staining mainly to lower corners, occasional small damages to edges), opening bifolio with gold, red, blue, green and black illuminated panels around three lines of text, the final bifolio similar, the panels filled with Chinese-style fruit, flowers and other devices, brown morocco binding with stamped cross-hatched design (slight scuffing and staining)

Lot Essay

Qur'an sections written by Chinese Muslims are relatively rare. They clearly show the Far Eastern influence both in the decoration and the script, which is derived from naskh. There are two folios from a similar Qur'an in the Chester Beatty Library.
