Album containing thirty-six albumen prints, each approx. 8 x 10¾in. or the reverse, including two two-part panoramas, 8 x 21 in. and 8 1/8 x 22 in., mounted one-per-page, all but four with printed paper labels from three or four different series, marbled end papers, printed paper credit label Afong Photographer by Appointment to Sir Arthur Kennedy, Governor of Hongkong and to H.I.H. The Grand Duke Alexis of Russia... Has always on hand a large Collection of Views of Foochow, Swatow, Hongkong, Canton its Environs and Macao...A Collection of 35 Views of the Effects of the late Typhoon occurred in Hongkong and Macao, with printed descriptions in neatly bound Albums., morocco-backed, blue cloth, ruled in gilt, oblong 4to.

Lot Essay

The first twenty photographs show the effects of the typhoon and are by Afong. Other images include views of Hong Kong, Canton, Swatow and Koolansoo and are probably also by Afong. Sir Anthony Kennedy was Governor of Hong Kong from 1872-77.

Afong Lai had the most noted and long-lived commercial firm in China established circa 1859 and surviving until 1941.
