Twenty-six albumen prints including one two-part panorama 8 x 21½ in., other sizes approx. 7¼ x 10½ in. to 8½ x 11 in. or the reverse, one titled in the negative, nine with photographer's ink credit stamp Afong Photographer Hong Kong on verso, twenty-one mounted on card, including five back-to-back, several titled in ink and two with photographer's ink credit stamps on mounts, occasional printed paper series labels, one with ink credit stamp on verso, fifteen matted. The view of the country inland of Hong Kong was exhibited at the National Gallery of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1984.

Lot Essay

Images include a panorama of Hong Kong's harbour showing the Victoria Peak; three early street scenes; several harbour views around Hong Kong and the fish market, Canton; a view of the country inland of Hong Kong which today is the Tai-Tam reservoir; two views of the destruction of the Church of St. Antonio in Macao in 1874 and a view of the palace of worship in Canton. One image of a farmer being transported in a wheelbarrow is attributed to W. Saunders but probably printed later by Afong.
