Twelve-part albumen print panorama, overall size approx. 7½ x 132 in., mounted one part-per-page in concertina album, half red morocco, ruled and titled in gilt on front cover, 9 x 11 in.

Lot Essay

An unmounted example of this twelve-part panorama was sold at Swann Galleries, New York on 6th October 1993, lot 229 where it was unattributed. The extensive view of Shanghai harbour shows a busy port where a variety of Chinese and foreign ships have been identified: Chinese custom vessels and clipper ships, a U.S. Navy gunboat, U.S.S. Palos, the P&O liner Rohilla, and H.B.M.S. vessel Cleopatra.
