Lot Essay

This service was ordered by the Austrian Court as a present for George IV of England on the occasion of his visit to the Vienna porcelain factory. Made between 1821 and 1824 it consisted of 316 pieces but the service was never presented to him. It was sent to Thailand and Japan with the East Asia exhibition, where it was sold separately. A tureen and cover was Exhibited in the 'Biedermeier in Oesterreich', Vienna exhibition, see Wilhelm Mrazek, Waltraud Neuwirth, 'Wiener Porzellan 1718-1864', Exhibition Catalogue, no. 704; a pair of plates from the same service were sold in these Rooms on 28 February 1994, lot 180 and a tureen and cover was sold by Sotheby's, 17 March 1987, lot 304
