Lot Essay

This spoon, with characteristic drop between the bowl and handle, belongs to one of the latest types of Roman cochlearia spoon. They are larger than preceding types and their bowls less rounded. Many, also, have leaf designs underneath as, for example, in the Kerynia treasure in the British Museum. Also, cf. Antiquités et Objets d'Art: Collection de Martine, Comtesse de Béhague, Sotheby's, Monaco, 5 December 1987, lot 128, for two spoons with similar decoration
