2o (322 x 194 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Davenant by W. Faithorne after J. Greenhill. (Some very light toning to a few leaves, a few tiny holes in text on leaves F4 of The Siege of Rhodes, Aaa2 of The Man's the Master, and Mmmm4 affecting a few letters, occasional very minor marginal browning or light staining.) Contemporary English mottled calf, covers blind-ruled, spine elaborately gilt, red morocco lettering piece, early marbled edges (skilfully rebacked preserving original spine). Provenance: early purchase note on frontispiece recto -- purchased from Hamill & Barker, Chicago, 6 March 1977.
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, containing poems and six plays not previously published, including 'The Law against Lovers,' adapted from 'Measure for Measure' and 'Much Ado' by his godfather (and reputed father) Shakespeare. Davenant succeeded Jonson as poet laureate, and was a close friend of Hobbes. He was a major reviver of Shakespeare and together with Dryden adapted Shakespeare's 'Tempest,' as well as produced versions of some of his other plays. Greg III:1047; Wing D320. A FINE CRISP COPY.
