Lot Essay

The present group corresponds to a terracotta listed in the sale on 8th May 1788 following the death in 1786 of the sculptor Pierre Surugue, who came second to Clodion in the Prix de Sculpture of 1759. It is described as 'un Faune donnant des leçons de flûte à un jeune Enfant' and recorded as being 14 inches high (Paris, loc. cit.).
