Lot Essay

The popularity of this bust is evident from the number of versions which exist, in terracotta, plaster and bronze. The Frick Collection possesses an example in terracotta, and in the catalogue note on that bust, Pope-Hennessy discusses the different theories regarding a possible attribution. The most persistent of these is an attribution to Houdon, which Pope-Hennessy dismisses, although he fails to ascribe the bust to any other artist and simply describes it as 'French, 18th Century' (loc. cit.).
